APEX Lantern (South Africa) follow up. by Peet van der Walt

Good day. Here is some extra news on the APEX lamps made in South
Africa (see Question #3246). I went to Cadac to see what old stuff
they had, as they invited me to come and have a look. There I found
these two APEX lamps still in a very good condition. They gave me
the lamps as they are not part of their history, and are not going
into their museum that is to be build. My other APEX is same as the
one on the left, the OLYMPIC. Both these lamps are copies of the
Coleman type lamps. The MARATHON is the “better” one as it has a
control for the cleaning needle and one to shut of fuel. Hope to
clean and burn them a.s.a.p. I will take photos as I clean and fix
for record.
They also gave me this lamp cut in half to view the inside of the
lamp.
A friend of mine, working in a camping shop, told me that he has
seen a few of these lamps in the past coming in to be fixed. So
they are around. I just need to find the owners and convince them
that they can live without their APEXes and that I know someone who
will take them off their hands.

there?
Some day, somebody in the company is going to regret getting
rid of these products, particularly the demo lantern. Thanks
for doing the digging, and saving the material! We now know a
bit more about another lantern maker. And a copy-cat that
isn't from China or India! :: Fil Graff ::

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did ask for some paperwork on
APEX but APEX was only bought over by the CADAC Company to
get the APEX name and to build the paraffin stoves, Never
went on with the lanterns so those ones I found is still from
the old company that does not exist anymore. But I will keep
my eyes open as I do have a good chance of finding something
somewhere. (The MARATHON lamp is the only lamp with
instructions in English and, yes, in AFRIKAANS. So now I know
how to fill, pump, light and put out my lamp.)
A copy cat you say, indeed and not proud to say, but the
quality is not what you would have expected from those years.
Maybe that is why they are gone? Will keep you posted.
Peet.
